Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. A small business is a business that is privately owned and operated, with a small number of employees and relatively low volume of sales. Small businesses are normally privately owned corporations, partnerships, or sole proprietorships. The legal definition of "small" varies historically, by country and by industry, but generally has fewer than 100 employees in the United States and under 50 employees in the European Union. However, in Australia, a small business is defined by the Fair Work Act 2009 as one with fewer than 15 employees. By comparison, a medium sized business or mid-sized business has under 500 employees in the US, 250 in the European Union and fewer than 200 in Australia. In addition to number of employees, other methods used to classify small companies include annual sales (turnover), value of assets and net profit (balance sheet), alone or in a mixed definition. These criteria are followed by the European Union, for instance (headcount, turnover and balance sheet totals). Small businesses are usually not dominant in their field of operation. Small businesses are common in many countries, depending on the economic system in operation. Typical examples include: convenience stores, other small shops (such as a bakery or delicatessen), hairdressers, tradesmen, lawyers, accountants, restaurants, guest houses, photographers, small-scale manufacturing etc. The smallest businesses, often located in private homes, are called microbusinesses (term used by international organizations such as the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation) or SoHos. The term "mom and pop business" is a common colloquial expression for a single-family operated business with few (or no) employees other than the owners. When judged by the number of employees, the American and the European definitions are the same: under 10 employees. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Over 60% of small businesses fail due to a lack of planning and execution of a business plan. When businesses are so small it is rare to have an HR manager, because of that training and follow-up is non-existent. Who would be accountable and how could management implement a training routine to make it beneficial and cost effective? Asked by babydollof4kids - Sat Sep 29 11:11:36 2007 - - 3 Answers - 2 Comments A. If you're only really asking about training, then it would depend on the size of the business. If there's only about 1 - 10 people, then it would usually be the duty of the owner to train new staff, as he or she would be the person with the most interest in ensuring that everyone knows what they are doing. If you go into 10 - 30 or so staff, you'd probably have an operational or production manager who should take care of training. Most businesses don't fail because of inadequate training though. As you pointed out, it's more about lack of planning. I ran my own small businesses for a few years, and I made sure to only hire people that didn't need any training! Is your concern that businesses fail because of no proper training programs? Answered by Jger - Sat Sep 29 11:32:40 2007 If i start a small business and it fails can I collect unemployment? Q. If I start a small business and the business fails can I collect unemployment benefits in the state of Michigan? If I can, do I needed to have made any money with the business? Any other important details to file or be eligible? Thanks! Asked by biggie - Wed May 27 18:39:06 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you pay yourself through a payroll system and have taxes taken out of your paycheck, then pay those taxes quarterly to your state and the IRS, and you work the required number of quarters in order to eligible for unemployment benefits -- maybe. You probably should go on the Work Force Commission website for your state and check for this information.
